Viveiro Lda is a company which was created for the production of plants to supply Cabo Golfe S.A. with a vast range of plants, trees, palm trees, cactus, etc.; for their big project Cotton Bay, Marina & Golf Resort in Cape Verde. Being it an eco-compatible resort with a very low density of construction, they will really need a big quantity of ornamental plants.
Why did we decide to create this company?Inside the nursery you can control and prevent the effects of insects and diseases which damage the plants allowing them to grow stronger in their initial phase. Thanks to these good conditions we are able to control and obtain a good growth: the plants have more probability of surviving and adapting when we move them to their definitive place in the resort.

How does the weather in Cape Verde affect the plants? It is very important to know which kind of plants adapt better to the weather conditions. After a vigorous study of the autochthones plants from the archipelago, we have been able to produce a timetable showing us the correct times and conditions for sowing, transplanting, fertilization (etc.) the plants to have the best outcome. At the moment we have more than 100 different species and all of them are growing healthy and quickly. We have different types of Palm Trees (Washingtonia, Canariensis, Real, Coco Nucifera, Areca, ec.), Bouganville, Hibiscus, Croton, Acacias (Rubra, Saligna, Flamboyant, etc.), Agaves, Aloe Vera, Cactus, etc.At the moment we have a total of 100.000 plants distributed in just 1 hectare with 11 hectares available for future production.
Sowing from seeds The sowing is realized in seedbeds, or individual pots. This first phase of the process is realized inside the nursery in a special section where the temperature is higher than the rest of the nursery to help the growth of the root.

Transplant The transplant is done just after the germination, when the first leafs are developed: the plants are then moved into the cooler section of the green house. By growing the plants in the green house we can have more control over the plants and make sure they are healthy and strong.

Once the plants are big enough we take them outside the greenhouse, to get them used to the Cape Verde climate. The reason is that when we move them to their final place in the Cotton Bay, Marina & Golf Resort, they won’t suffer from any change (climate, soil, sun, wind, etc.): they’ll be used to the outside weather already.

In the green house we are also testing different kinds of grasses for the golf course. After testing 10 different typologies, we have decided to use “paspalum”, for the rough and the fairway (this grass supports around 80% of salt water) and “agrostis”, for the green (this grass is finer and is watered with normal water).
