The Sensational Hive Project by World Renowned Grant Associates

The Hive by Grant Associates, in Worcester, UK.

In the world of landscape architecture, sustainability has become a standard that most designers aspire to. It’s a practice that is even more important in today’s growing world than ever before and can be found in almost every press release for every major new project. And what better symbol to use for a sustainable project than that of a beehive, something that sustainable practices will hopefully help to preserve for future generations.

Located in Worcester, UK, The Hive, a “BREEAM Outstanding” project, is home to the first joint university and public library – a venture between the City of Worcester and its University. The project was 10 years in the making and the result is a destination that invites learning both inside and out.

The Building and the Architects Involved

At the centerpiece is the building itself, a sustainable masterpiece that’s name was chosen as a way to represent purposeful activity, and does just that by making use of renewable energy and recycling facilities throughout. Worcester City Council hired Bath based architects, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios to design the building itself. They won the international Bentley Be Inspired Innovation in Generative Design and were shortlisted for Best Designed Project and for Local Government Team in the Public-Private Finance awards for their design.

What was the mission for Grant Associates?

The Worcester City Council also hired Grant Associates, a British Landscape Architecture consultancy, to design the outside of the building, with instructions “to create a high quality landscape environment that would become a distinctive and exciting visitor attraction – a place which would capture a sense of history and place whilst reflecting on the contemporary themes of sustainability and technological innovation.”

What was the inspiration for the project?

For inspiration, the team looked to the local ecosystems that can be found in and around Worcester, that of the River Severn, the Malvern Hills, and the Elgar Trail. These areas also inspired the storytelling for the project which is, “Nature uplifts the spirits,” “Healthy water for sustained life,” and “Knowledge and Heritage.”

These design stories led to the actual design, which emerged to include a series of islands and belvederes, or vantage points designed to incorporate views, that overlook the Water Meadow and the Causeway.

The Inclusion of the Water Meadow

The Water Meadow is the focal point of the landscape and is used for educational purposes to teach visitors about the importance of clean water. It is low maintenance but functional in that it is able to handle seasonal flooding from the river. Plantings here include cowslips, orchids, fritillary’s and flag irises, all of which were grown from locally harvested seeds.

How is The Hive benefiting from natural systems?

The water meadow also serves as a filtration system for rainwater and surface runoff, which demonstrates to visitors the capabilities of natural systems without the use of chemicals for cleaning water, one example of this is that the water has to flow through reed bed swales before infiltrating back into the ground, thus leaving it cleaner.

In the middle of the water meadow, two habitat isles can be found. One can be accessed via bridge directly from the children’s library and serves as a retreat where children can read and experience nature at the same time. The second isle is a wildlife haven that includes the rare Black Poplar Trees to provide secluded nesting spots.

Finally, The Causeway is simply the pedestrian route that circles in and around the Library and History Centre. They include terraces for sitting and outdoor rooms along with bridges that connect to adjoining sites and invite visitors to reflect on the therapeutic qualities of nature.

Peter Chmiel, director, Grant Associates said, “The landscape of The Hive Worcester Library and History Centre aims to be a leading example of sustainable design, including SUDS drainage, water attenuation, productive urban gardens, locally sourced materials and plant species, and careful landscape management to enhance species diversity and ecological richness.”

Na relva artificial pode-se sempre jogar nas mesmas boas circunstâncias. Na relva natural já não é possível jogar depois de umas 300 horas por temporada, ao passo que a relva artificial está disponível para utilizaçao 24 horas por dia, 7 dias por semana.
A relva artificial é insensível às circunstâncias meteorológicasNa época de chuvas, um campo em relva artificial permite ser utilizado sem interupções, pois a sua permeabilidade e a da base tornam o campo sempre funcional. O tempo seco não tem efeito sobre a qualidade da relva. Adeus poças, lama ou zonas carecas na relva. Com a relva artificial pode-se fazer todas as competiçõese os treinos não devem ser anulados…ideal, não?
A relva artificial é de fácil manutenção
O arrelvamento, o corte, a adubagem, traçar as linhas…a ’verdadeira’ relva requer muito esforço, tempo e dinheiro. A relva artificial não. Se bem mantido, o seu terreno de relva artificial tem uma vida útil de 15 anos, mantendo todas as características técnicas desportivas.

A relva artificial para o jardim e a cidade

Instalar relva artificial

Colocar a relva artificial no jardim, na sua rua ou aldeia, na sua empresa, é bastante rápido e fácil. Se a superfície de aplicação é ou puder ser tornada suficientemente uniforme, a relva artificial poderá ser colocada em quase qualquer lugar. A instalação de um campo desportivo de relva artificial leva em média três a seis semanas. Dependendo do desporto, escolhe-se um determinado tipo de base, material de enchimento (areia, borracha) e fibra de relva artificial. Cada campo desportivo de relva artificial é feito sob medida.
Em geral, o processo de instalação pode ser descrito em 5 fases:
Fase 1. Escavar o terreno
Fase 2. Aplicar a camada de base permeável
Fase 3. Desenrolar e colocar os rolos de relva artificial
Fase 4. Encher com areia e/ou borracha (infill)
Fase 5. O seu campo de relva artificial está pronto para o jogo

Manutenção da relva artificial

O relvado artificial não necessita de muita manutenção. Para a relva artificial para fins privados ou públicos basta escovar regularmente o relvado artificial, remover sujidades e folhas, e eventualmente acrescentar um pouco cargas. Para manter a sua relva artificial mais bonita durante mais tempo, aconselha-se uma manutenção periódica pelo fabricante de relva artificial.

Anthony Paul, a landscape designer from New Zealand knows how to enhance the space, both aesthetically and environmentally, transforming a garden into a little heaven. He says: “My approach to every project is always site specific. Gardens shouldn’t fight with their surroundings but carefully lead the eye through and towards the countryside beyond – I avoid putting in any stiff hedges or strong barriers. I design my gardens to be comfortable and relaxing but also architecturally exciting. Particular attention is paid to hard surfaces – their forms and patterns are very carefully worked out and I always use natural materials or ceramics. My decks are something I am particularly proud of and their precision“.

Anthony Paul‘s gardens are restrained and simple, requiring little maintenance. He is not into cottage gardens, featuring lots of pretty flowers and colour for the sake of it. He tries to keep a simple palette and work with materials and plants which look natural in the environment he is given. Where possible he tries to use native species in the gardens, an example of this philosophy can be seen in his recently-finished project in New Zealand.

YOU DREAM OF A WINTER GARDEN WHERE YOU WILL NEVER GET BORED AND SPEND THE COLD DAYS? IF YES, LET’S GET TO WORK!

It is enjoyable to spend time in glass shelters, which are called “winter gardens”, in cold days. Even if there is a freezing cold outside, you can live the spring in a winter garden. A winter garden is usually made of glass and is as a separate building in the garden. If you do not have such a big area, you can cover a room stretching towards the garden with glass and turn it into a winter garden.

BEFORE YOU START WORK!

These plants with their orange and yellow fruits are as bright as gold, and they will add warmth to your winter garden. Gardenia with its white blooms, azaleas with their pink blooms should definitely be in your list! Cycas, bamboo and banana trees will cause a summer air in four seasons. While choosing these plants, you should take the size of your garden into consideration. You can cause confusion by adding too many plants in your winter garden. Do not let this happen! Ensure the feeling of completeness by putting the plants in the pots that are in agreement with each other. Earthen, galvanized or reed flower pots will be suitable for winter garden in provance or country style. You can use bright flower pots for a modern view. Do not forget that all of these plants need air, water and light in different amounts. Azaleas like acidic soil and therefore this soil should not be used for a banana tree. If you take the demands of these plants into consideration, you will have them present their most beautiful sides in all four seasons.
